Kauai: Part 2 - Snorkeling at Anini Beach and the Waimea Canyon

On our third day in Kauai, the skies were clear and the water was calm so we headed to Anini beach to do some snorkeling.  The beach is protected by a reef offshore, so the waters inside the reef were perfect for snorkeling and paddleboarding.

We met another couple on the beach who had rented paddleboards for the week and they let us borrow them for a little while.

That is not me in the picture... but that is the girl who loaned me her board for a short paddle!
Mike on the paddleboard... looking for the best snorkel spot.

Some sort of sea slug???

PLEASE notice the GIGANTIC eel that FREAKED me out!  I was faster than an Olympic swimmer to get outta there.

And my favorite part of Anini Beach... ALL the sea turtles!  There were a lot!  And this one only had 3 legs (fins? flippers? arms? not really sure what you call sea turtle extremities)...

He seemed to be doing alright though.  He was swimming just like all the other turtles.

Another nice thing about Anini beach is that there are outdoor, fresh water showers.  After snorkeling we rinsed off, hoped back in the car and drove south.

We had lunch in Poipu at a place called "Puka Dog."  They were featured on the travel channel for having one of the best hotdogs.  They have a very limited menu and for good reason... there is no need to get anything besides a puka dog.  They are phenomenal.  It's a Polish sausage dog in a soft, hollowed out bun with garlic mustard and a "special relish"... we tried the mango and pineapple relishes.  Amazing.  And fresh squeezed lemonade to wash it down.  Ahhh.  If you find yourself in Poipu... go there.

After lunch, we drove up the curvy mountain road to Waimea Canyon.  It was a cloudy day, but not much rain.  It made the canyon seem so grand and kinda ominous.

At the top we stopped at the Kalalau lookout.  This whole area is breathtaking.  We stood in awe for quite a while.

Notice the 3 waterfalls mid picture.

The NaPali coast is indescribable.  It is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

There are a few things on Kauai that you cannot miss... even if you try:

#1) Roosters.  They are everywhere.

#2) Humpback whales [in winter only]. They also are everywhere! There will be more whale videos to come... stay tuned.

Check out this video of our snorkeling adventures at Anini Beach and Tunnels Beach.  At the start of the video you can see a humpback whale breach the surface of the water just offshore at Anini Beach.

After snorkeling at Tunnels Beach, we headed to the airport for a helicopter tour of the island... more to come on that in the next post.
